Some of these abilities are very important to the story too. Nicely interwoven. Leveling is done the old fashioned way. Defeated monsters/enemies are worth EXP. When you get enough, you level up, increasing your stats automatically. All characters learn abilities. Some are unique to that character, while others can be learned by anyone. For example, the ability Level Up increases the amount of experience that character gains after battle, or Bright Eyes makes you immune to Darkness. People will never learn the same active abilities though, so don't worry about everyone becoming a clone of each other. You won't find your White Mage learning to be a Dragoon. The way you learn these abilities is different too. You learn them by wearing and using different pieces of equipment. While you equip something, let's say one of Zidane's weapons, The Ogre you will be able to use the Soul Blade ability as long as it's equipped. However, after battle you also gain Ability Points, or AP. Each ability has a certain AP requirement, and once you reach it you can use that ability forever no matter what you equip. Once it's learned, it's yours. Soul Blade is an active ability, meaning one you select in battle and choose to use. Level Up and Bright Eyes are passive abilities. The thing about those is, you have to choose which ones you're going to be using. As you level up you're given an increasing number of (I forget the name, so let's just call them) Ability Stones. Each passive ability requires a certain number to be made to work. For example, if you had 10 Stones, and Level Up costs 7 to equip and Bright Eyes costs 4, you would only be able to equip one. This gives the characters versatility too. If enemies where you are start using Darkness a lot, you're covered. But if you move on and the next ones don't use it, then you'll not have to worry about Darkness and can switch your points over to something else. It's not nearly as complicated as I think I'm making it sound. lol Once it's in front of you, it'll be natural as breathing. Story is quite solid. I don't get as into it as I do 7 or 10, but again those are tough acts to follow. That said, I do develop a bond with the characters. I do begin to care what happens to them. That's more than many games have managed in a long while. Vivi, the Black Mage, in particular is awesome. If I had to give it a rating, I'd give it about a 9 out of 10. (No pun intended for once. lol) Battle System is turn based, just like 7. You can inflict status ailments, make physical or magic attacks, use items, heal, etc. You know, the Usual. Limit Breaks in this game are called Trance. It happens automatically once your character's Trance Gauge is full. It's different for each character, but you do get control over it all. For Zidaine's Trance the active abilities he's learned (like Soul Blade) change into other attacks which all basically do increased amounts of damage. For Vivi's Trance, he'll be able to double cast black magics. Starting out you'll only be able to do this a couple turns, but the more often you enter Trance, the longer you can stay there the next time. Sort of like building a muscle.
I hope I was clear enough. I do have a tendency to ramble. If there's anything else you'd need to know, just say the word. |
Sorry, I don't have the time to read all that, I have a game to buy!
Thanks for helping out! |

| What?! You mean I did all that typing for nothing? *hmph* You ask a question, and then don't want to listen when you see the answer is a mere 500 pages long? Kids these days, I tell you. In my day when someone went to the effort of making a rediculously long monster post, we sat down and read every word. No respect anymore. Shameful, is what it is. Now did I ever tell you about the time---- ADMIN EDIT: This post is being cut off. To let Monkey continue would endanger the site as a whole. It just can't handle that many words. Oh, fine then. I've got to go anyway. MY copy just finished downloading and installing. In all seriousness though, Reo, glad to help. That's what the Nation is all about. __________________________ |

All that is EXACTLY why I've gone back for this FF entry. I missed 8 and 9 somehow back when they came out, and i always wondered how they were. Found out I hated 8, looking very forward to 9. I remember when I first met the Final Fantasy series. In 1989, CES came to new orleans in the convention center. My dad didn't like me playing games, but he knew how much I loved my NES and Nintendo Power magazines so he took me. It wasn't the spectacle it became over the years, but this was right around the time of "The Wizard" so they had a few advertisingy things there for SMB3. There was a Nintendo and a Sega section, and that was about it. id read about FF in Nintendo power and I had to try it out. I played all the way up through the fight with Bikke and the Pirates and was hooked. I HAD to have it when it came out.
This has just given me an idea for a new thread...

Yup. Let's see if I can remember them all:
Super Rub a Dub Wipeout HD (with Fury) Toy Home Elefunk Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty flOw Flower PixelJunk Monsters Joe Danger
Darn. I'll get back to you one that last one. |
I really want to try wipeout HD, and I heard Pixeljunk games are great. I have flow, but i just dont really understand it. Maybe its one of those things where if you think too much into it you miss the entire point.

Man, I was terrible at every Mega Man other than 2 and 3. I never beat any of the other ones. |

| Wipeout HD is by far (from every game I've played) the best PSN game. It's got a ton of replayability, very fun, very frantic... it's a must buy, in my opinion |
