When you see your fellow countrymen wounded and in pain, when you wrap them up in body bags to send home to their loved ones. When you have to go and tell a wife that she is now a widow, that her children are now orphans, and by the way - the house you are living in belongs to the Army and you are no longer entitled to live in it.
When you have done those things you will know that the desire to make it stop is overwhelming.
I can not, and will not, judge those that had to make this terrible decision that probably haunted them for the rest of their days. No wonder their perception changed. How many of you have done something you wished you hadn't, and when you replay it in your head you alter bits to make you less guilty?
They could not let the war continue, but they then get portrayed as the vilan for ending the allied suffering. Given the choice of 250K of theirs or just 84K of mine, sorry, let them make the calls to the next of kin. Don't forget 'only' carpet bombing (Dresden/London) or a land invasion (anywhere in mainland Europe)) would have caused civilian casualties as well.
Should they have dropped the first one - yes. Should they have dropped the second - yes (how many allies were dying while Japan 'considered her options'?). Should we apologise - never. Do not judge decisions made in war by civilian standards.
How many lives have been saved since 1945 by the nuclear deterrence?
Sorry if this comes accross as arrogant, but one thing guarenteed to make me scream at the TV is someone sat in their big comfy armchair at home, criticising the actions of a soldier fighting for their life miles away from home trying to protect your freedom.
Should we quietly reflect on the waste of life that is war? Damn straight. |

| In matters of warfare the soldier or ex soldier does not speak out of turn when that person has the most experience of warfare. That isn't on a console or PC. or Tv. __________________________| Quote: | | "I agree with all Liam has said so far" - Seyel |
