Is it just me and my cynical views on political shenanigans?
As a country coming out of a global recession (we have to pay more taxes, fuel has hit an all time high etc)
How can we justify the expense of sorting out Gaddafi?
A report in a UK paper said "we will not stand by and watch him kill his own people"
I don't ever remember them saying that about Mugabe but then again he's not sitting on a lot of oil..... Thinking

I think you have it sorted with this.
Its all about the oil.

I don't think it is about the oil -- Libya is a bit player in the world oil production stakes. Mugabe also never publically stated that he will go house to house killing all his opponents; slightly different threat level.

Sorry. Embarassed

I'm not sure what to think of it yet. Sometimes I'm terrible with keeping up with the news (which has been lately) so the first time I hear about Libya is when the Japanese earthquake stuff isn't the biggest link on the BBC anymore and then wham! the UN is sending countries to the area to create a no-fly zone.

I was reading about the no fly zone thingy going on in libya and the U.S. thinks this can be the perfect time to use their percious F-22's over there but I don't think thats necessary Neutral

OK a number of things about this whole no-fly zone:

1: The US has stated that we will not be a leader in the coalition and yet of 124 Tomahawk missiles launched by the US and Britain the US fired 122 of them and the British just 2, sounds like leading the coalition to me

2: This is about a no-fly zone and yet what was some of the first targets of the air strikes? How about a column of Qaddafi tanks outside of Banghazi, last I checked tanks don't have anti-air capabilities or the ability to fly

3: The whole thing about "the Arab League supports the no-fly zone" is a bunch of bs because the Security Council declared this when? Friday? and yet we didn't have Arab planes conducting strikes until Monday/Tuesday

4: This is totally about oil, why else would we bother?

5: We make such a big deal about what Qaddafi is doing and yet what do we do in Bahrain where the Monarchy there is putting down protesters as well and its also important to mention that Saudi Arabia has sent troops into Bahrain to support the Monarchy

6: We really shouldn't be bothering with Libya because what started as a crackdown on protesters who wanted reform has now turned into a Civil War, all it takes is like 500,000 AK-47s, five minutes of free time, and you have a ragtag army ready to go, what I really think started out as a no-fly zone has turned into us being the air force that the rebels lacked when this all began.....

My real problem with this whole thing is that the US once again proves how its foreign policy is inconsistent because we only bother with countries that have one of the below things:
1:Natural Resources, particularly oil, I'm looking at you Middle East
2: Strategic territory, I'm looking at you Egypt/Turkey
3: Something else that impacts our national security, I'm looking at you Colombia

I do think it's about the oil. Mugabe may not have publically said anything but we all know it's going on yet we don't appear to be that bothered by it.

Edit: Very good points Vrals. Would give you a Plus one but I'm not able to at the moment Puzzled
