Gay bar wins right to ban sleazy women A gay bar in Melbourne has been granted the right to ban women to protect its patrons from unwanted advances by sleazy straight females. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has ruled that Sircuit bar, in Collingwood, is exempt from anti-discrimination laws, and is now able to turn women away at the door, the Herald Sun reports "This is to ensure that gay men are not subject to attempts to change their sexuality, which reduce their comfort in the venue, which includes being fully accepted for who they are," VCAT said. Despite this, Sircuit bar's general manager said the two-storey club — which featured a maze, movie lounges, private rooms and a wash area — never had a problem with women trying to turn gay men straight. "We haven't had that problem here. But it does happen that women try and turn gay men straight," he told the Herald Sun. Other gay venues have been unsuccessful in banning patrons based on sexuality, but the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission said the VCAT ruling on Sircuit bar did not contravene the Charter of Human Rights.
